Ghana Introduces Digital Travel Authorization System
Ghana has introduced significant immigration reforms, moving to a fully digital pre-travel authorization model as of 25 May 2026.
Travelers who were previously visa-exempt must now obtain a mandatory Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. This applies to most nationalities, including certain African Union nationals, while ECOWAS and AES nationals remain visa-exempt.
For travelers who require a visa, Ghana has also launched a new online eVisa system, enabling applicants to submit documentation, pay fees and receive approval electronically, typically within a few days.
At the same time, visa-on-arrival options have been discontinued, meaning all eligible travelers must secure the appropriate authorization in advance of travel.
These changes place greater emphasis on pre-travel compliance and planning, with travelers at risk of being denied boarding or entry if requirements are not met.
