UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): Frequently Asked Questions

UPDATE - February 16th, 2026: The requirement for eligible nationals to possess a UK ETA will be strictly enforced (without discretion) from February 25, 2026. From this date, those requiring an ETA will not be allowed to travel to the United Kingdom unless they have one.

An ETA provides a digital permission to travel to the UK. However, note, it does not confer permission to enter the UK - it is not a visa. Non-visa nationals such as US citizens will still have visa-free status therefore but will need an ETA prior to travel.

Note: After February 25, 2026, British and Irish dual citizens travelling to the UK should carry proof of their status to show they are exempt from the ETA requirement. Without this evidence, travelers may face delays or risk being denied boarding by airlines.

For more detailed information on the implications of the UK ETA on British and Irish dual nationals, see this blog prepared by Fragomen Director, Shuyeb Muquit.
